Ischia DOC white wine

In addition to red wines, the Ischia DOC designation also collects a prestigious series of types of white wines. These wines are the Ischia DOC bianco and bianco superiore, Ischia DOC Forastera and Ischia DOC Biancolella. Already known in ancient times and mentioned in the writings of important Latin authors, Campania white wines with the Ischia DOC designation have kept their success intact over time: in 1966 Ischia wines were the first Campania wines to obtain the DOC designation at a regional level (the second ones at a national level). The success and the excellence of the white wines produced on the island of Ischia are the result of the local climatic conditions, mainly consisting in mild weather during most of the year and in hot summer tempered by sea breezes, of the morphology of the territories, basically made up of sandy and volcanic elements, with a predominant presence of green tuff and pumice, and of the modes of cultivation and of the wine production, regulated and protected by the relative procedural guideline. Ischia DOC white wines have a more or less intense straw yellow colour (with greenish reflections in the case of the Ischia DOC Biancolella wine); as far as the olfactory profile is concerned, Ischia DOC white wines are distinguished by a vinous, delicate and characteristic aroma, while they release a dry, harmonious and a perfectly full-bodied flavour. The spumante version is also available for the types of wine called Ischia DOC bianco and Ischia DOC bianco superiore.

Ischia DOC white wines: a brief overview on the modes of production

For the white wines called Ischia DOC Biancolella and Ischia DOC Forastera it has been foreseen the use of grapes coming from the vines of the same name for a minimum percentage of 85 per cent, then it is allowed the use of grapes coming from other non-aromatic white grape varieties, suitable for cultivation in the district of Naples, for a maximum percentage of 15 per cent.
