Campania red wines with the IGP/IGT designation

Campania red wines obtained the IGP/IGT designation (Protected Geographical Indication; since 2010 it includes the IGT designation – Typical Geographical Indication) since the beginning of 1990s. The Campania region boasts of ten typologies of red wines classified as IGP/IGT. These designations include the entire regional territory, indeed Campania red wines with the IGP/IGT designation are divided into 9 sub-regional and one regional types. Their names recall those of the production areas or of specific municipalities that are part of them: while the regional designation takes the obvious name of the reference region (Campania IGP, precisely), the other nine designations are so called: Benevento ( or Beneventano) IGP, Catalanesca del Monte Somma IGP, Colli di Salerno IGP, Dugenta IGP, Epomeo IGP, Paestum IGP, Pompeiano IGP, Roccamonfina IGP and finally Terre del Volturno IGP. The main characteristic of Campania with the IGP/IGT designation red wines lies in the use of certain percentages of grapes from various black grape varieties, among which Aglianico and Aglianicone, Piedirosso and Sciascinoso stand out. These red wines are characterized by a more or less intense ruby red colour, a pleasant smell ranging from floral to fruity, and a mostly dry, fresh and harmonious, sometimes sweet flavour.
