Fiano di Avellino DOCG

Fiano di Avellino DOCG is a Campania white wine produced from the Fiano vine, formerly known as “Vitis Apicia” due to the fact that its typical characteristic is to attract bees’swarms because of the grape’s sweet scent. Historically, the arrival in Italy of the original Fiano grape traces back to the era of the Greek influence and the first vines were planted in the territory of Lapio, in the internal area called Irpinia. Approved with the DOCG designation in 2003, Fiano di Avellino DOCG wines can be produced in a limited area of municipalities in the district of Avellino, divided into four sub-areas covering the territory of the municipalities of Lapio, Summonte, Montefredane and a large part of the eastern hilly area around the city of Avellino. The organoleptic properties of Fiano di Avellino DOCG wine lend it a more or less intense straw yellow colour, a pleasant, intense and fine olfactory profile, and a characteristic flavour, which results in a fresh and harmonious taste. Each different type of soil in the various producytion areas lends this wine the specific qualities deriving from the special morphological and climatic conditions: Fiano di Avellino DOCG wine produced in the Lapio area calls to mind mountain wines, due to its full-bodied structure and its abundance in mineral and acid elements; that one produced in the Summonte area reflects the hardness and the difficulty of working the soil and it is therefore a powerful and concentrated wine, characterized by fruity notes; Fiano di Avellino DOCG wine from the district of Avellino has a smoky character and it recalls the hazelnut groves spread throughout the territories of this province.
