Sannio DOC
Sannio DOC
Sannio DOC wines attained the DOC designation (Controlled Designation of Origin) in 1997 and their procedural guideline imposes the use of grapes coming from vineyards positioned on a hilly landscape, where the atmospheric conditions are the best for the production of high-quality ranged grapes, and exclusively sited in the district of Benevento. The presence of five geographical sub-areas makes the Sannio DOC area one of the most complex wine districts in Italy, counting on more than 300 distinct types of wine. In ancient times already described about their gustatory qualities as wines with a “slightly smoked aroma” and an “intense resinous fragrance” by Pliny the Elder, Cato and Horace, red wines with the Sannio DOC designation are characterised by a dry and balanced flavour, sometimes medium sweet, and by a pleasant scent that reminds of the fruit trees and the flowers which populate the Samnite hills.
Sannio DOC red wines: a brief overview on the modes of production
The success of red wines with the Sannio DOC designation is due to the fact that wineries still generally follow traditional cultivation methods, working the traditional varieties grown in the area, such as Aglianico, Piedirosso (locally known as “Per’e Palummo”) and Sciascinoso (known as “Olivella”). Red wines with the Sannio DOC designation are 50 per cent based on the Sangiovese grapes, while the remaining part can be made up of Aglianico, Barbera and Piedirosso grapes.
