La cantina di Enza: wines, history and philosophy
La Cantina di Enza was founded in 2011 in Montemarano, a small town located in the heart of the famous Irpinia wine-growing area, and takes its name from its creator Enza Saldutti, fourth generation of a family that has always been dedicated to the world of viticulture. In her work Enza is assisted by her parents and her main objective is to “cultivate” a genuine relationship with the territory from which she comes, a relationship based on listening, care and direct attention to the valorisation of the land and its products in a circular perspective, which the producer herself translates into practice by adopting “natural viticulture”. In fact, the work of Enza Saldutti is mainly based on traditional techniques of plant cultivation and grape processing, aimed at maintaining and preserving the typicality and authenticity of historic native vines.
La Cantina di Enza: the wines
The first official label of La Cantina di Enza was born in 2011, currently around 15 thousand bottles are produced, each characterized by an authentic, inimitable and long-lasting flavour, through which five types of wine are described embracing three important Campania designations, with interesting experiments and an all-female look at the world of wine. La Cantina di Enza extends over approximately 7 hectares, of which only 5 are vineyards (including old post-phylloxera vines of approximately 70 years) while the remaining part is dedicated to the cultivation of olive groves and cereals. The vineyards are all located with a southern exposure and at an altitude of around 380-400 metres, in an area characterized by strong temperature variations due to the presence of the Calore river. Those of Enza Saldutti are wines that do not undergo manipulation, extremely recognisable, in many cases the processing involves the absence of additions of chemical or sulphurous compounds, the macerations take place without temperature control and the clarification and filtration activities are not of a chemical or mechanical nature. The conversion to organic took place in 2016 and since then the winery’s path has continued towards biodynamic. This is how Enza wines are born and thrive, currently involving four types of red and a rosé wine: Taurasi DOCG “Padre” Bio, a full-bodied and structured red wine, a must in the Montemarano areas; the Irpinia Aglianico DOC “Passione” Bio red wine, the Campania Rosato “Nata Rosa” IGP, a rosé wine with Aglianico grapes, “Dall’uva”, an organic red wine and, to finish on a high note, an interesting experiment, the red wine “Volpe Rossa”, made with the grapes of an ancient Campania vine in danger of extinction, the Coda di Volpe Rosso, defined as a “feminine Taurasi”.
