(indeed, most of the native grapes comes from vineyards of Greek orgin), during the Roman Empire Campania wines highly prospered to the point that the exports also deeply grew out of the Italic peninsula. In fact, the most famous wines at that time, as “Falerno”, “Caleno”, “Faustiniano”, named “the emperors’ wines” by Cicero, Virgil and Martial, were produced in the Campania region, that Pliny The Elder not by chance defined with the name of “Campania Felix” in order to stress its particularly flourishing morphological conditions. Its current succes starts since 1930s, thanks to the exportation of the Aglianico in the Piemonte region and in France by the well-known “wine railway”.
