The Roviello Bianco grape: tradition, excellence, and the uniqueness of the Campanian terroir

Roviello Bianco, also known by its local name Grecomusc’, is one of the rarest and most intriguing indigenous white grape varieties of Campania. Its history is deeply rooted in the ancient viticultural tradition of Irpinia: already documented in the 19th century under the names “Roviello” or “Rovello,” this variety has been rediscovered and brought back to life only recently, thanks to the efforts of small producers and passionate researchers who have helped reestablish its value among the most distinctive white wines of Irpinia.

The name Grecomusc’—which roughly translates to “flabby Greco”—refers to the loose cluster structure, where the predominance of thick skins over the pulp gives the grape a slightly withered look at full ripeness. This feature, combined with its low yield and sensitivity during cultivation, led the variety to the brink of extinction. Native to the area between the towns of Taurasi and Bonito in the province of Avellino, Roviello Bianco is now cultivated on just over 4 hectares, with a dedicated preservation and propagation center located in Taurasi itself.

From an ampelographic standpoint, the variety is characterized by medium-sized leaves, pyramidal grape clusters, and small round berries with thick yellow-amber skins. Many of the oldest vines are still grown on their own ungrafted roots, further enhancing the grape’s historical and agricultural value. It typically ripens in the second half of September and demonstrates excellent resistance to drought and common vine diseases.

Wines Made from Roviello Bianco

Vinified in purity, Roviello Bianco yields white wines of great character and aging potential, offering a unique aromatic profile within the Campanian wine landscape. In the glass, these wines present a straw yellow color with golden highlights. The nose opens with mineral and herbal notes, accented by wildflowers, citrus, and light spice. On the palate, they are dry, savory, structured, and persistent, supported by naturally high acidity and a potential alcohol content that often exceeds 13% vol.

Extended aging on fine lees enhances their complexity and longevity, allowing elegant nuances of almond, flint, and acacia honey to emerge over time. Today, the Grecomusc wine, or Roviello Bianco wine, is produced almost exclusively under the Campania Bianco IGT designation. The few wineries that work with this variety are based in the town of Taurasi, standing as exemplary custodians of local viticultural heritage. The result is a rare and expressive Irpinian white wine, marked by authenticity, finesse, and depth.
