The better part of the Campania region is cultivated with vineyards which result in recognized high-quality ranged red wines like “Taurasi DOCG” or “Aglianico del Taburno DOCG”, and in really fine white wines like “Greco di Tufo DOCG”, “Fiano di Avellino DOCG”, “Falanghina”, and many other excellent wines.

Campania wines through history

Introduced by the Greeks between the 7th and 6th centuries B.C. (indeed, most of the native grapes comes from vineyards of Greek orgin), during the Roman Empire Campania wines highly prospered to the point that the exports also deeply grew out of the Italic peninsula. In fact, the most famous wines at that time, as “Falerno”, “Caleno”, “Faustiniano”, named “the emperors’ wines” by Cicero, Virgil and Martial, were produced in the Campania region, that Pliny The Elder not by chance defined with the name of “Campania Felix” in order to stress its particularly flourishing morphological conditions. Its current succes starts since 1930s, thanks to the exportation of the Aglianico in the Piemonte region and in France by the well-known “wine railway”.
